The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville’s Handy Person Ministry
Volunteers for The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville provide a valuable service for individuals who are 60 years of age and above or permanently disabled, living within our service area, by providing free labor for minor home repairs.
Scope of Jobs –
Some of the typical jobs our volunteers handle include replacing small appliances (such as garbage disposals or ceiling fans), installing door knobs and deadbolts, fixing or replacing storm doors or pre-hung doors, repairing steps, fixing porch railings, reattaching gutters to the first floor of a house, hanging or adjusting pictures, installing safety grab bars in bathrooms, repairing leaky faucets, replacing batteries or lightbulbs or minor outdoor jobs.
Requesting a Job –
Residents in and around Kernersville, (Walkertown, Belews Creek, Colfax, and Oak Ridge) may call The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville’s office at 336-996-6696 to request a minor repair. All labor provided by volunteers of The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville is free of charge; however, the requester is required to pay for any materials necessary to complete the work.
Job Evaluation –
After a request is received from a homeowner within the service area, it will be sent to our volunteers to be evaluated. Requests are collected and sent to volunteers weekly. The volunteer who accepts the job will evaluate the work to be done, discuss any materials needed and give a target date for completion. Some jobs may not be able to be completed by The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville’s volunteers depending on the evaluation.
Limitations of Service –
Volunteers will make their best effort to meet the service recipient’s needs; however, we cannot provide warranties as to the adequacy of the work to resolve the stated issue. Our volunteers are not bonded and licensed professionals such as contractors, plumbers, electricians etc., which can limit the complexity of jobs volunteers perform.
Referrals –
Complex repairs, especially those requiring specific technical knowledge or safety standards, may be beyond the volunteers’ capabilities. For the jobs that require more expertise, staff or volunteers of The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville may give referrals to licensed professionals. We may also refer extensive wheelchair ramp builds and repairs to other resources.
All labor related to requested repairs is provided by volunteers without charge. The requester is required to pay for any materials necessary to do the work.
Donations to support this ministry are highly appreciated and can be made directly to The Shepherd’s Center of Kernersville, 626 Gralin St, Kernersville, NC 27284.
